大学で何を勉強されているんですか？(されんたんですか？)という質問は、英語のやり取りでよく出てきます。
例えば英語で自己紹介をする時に、「○○学を専攻しています（いました）」というように、学問の名前を英語でパッと言えたらカッコいいですね。
今日は、学問の英語名を一覧にしたものと、それを当てはめた英会話のフレーズを紹介します。

学問の名前 英語一覧
"-gy"で終わるものが多いものの、"... studies"や"...science"という言い方もありますね。同じ学問でもいくつか言い方があるものもあります。
確かに、日本語でもそうですね。
下記の表に書いた英語の学問名は、一般的な言い方で、イギリス人の夫ボビット（Bobbit）によるネイティブチェック済です。
もし海外の大学に留学される場合は、下記の表を参考にしつつ、各大学における正式な表記を調べてみてください。

勉強している分野を英語で言う
上記の学問の英語名をどのように文章にするのか、ご説明します。
次の文章に、自分の勉強している分野を当てはめるだけでOK。
上に載っていなくても、例えば「応用〇〇」であれば"applied ..."になりますし、文学の中でも「日本文学」であれば"Japanese literature"と言うことが出来ます。
What are you studying?
何を勉強されているんですか？
- I'm studying archaeology.
考古学を勉強しています。
もう卒業している人に対しては、過去形で聞きます。
What did you study?
何を勉強されたんですか？
- I studied biochemistry.
生物化学を勉強しました。
もし他の人の話をする場合はこちら。(ちゃんと知っているときは"I think"は付けなくてももちろん大丈夫です。)
What is he studying?
彼は何を勉強しているの？
- I think he is studying sociology.
社会学を勉強していると思う。
もう一つの言い方は"major"（専攻）という単語を使った言い方です。your majorで「あなたの専攻」という名詞になります。動詞として使う場合は「major + in + (学問の名前)」です。
What's your major?
専攻はなんですか？
- I'm majoring in computer science.
情報科学を専攻しています。
学問の英語、豆知識
さて、今回は学問の英語名がテーマですが、イギリス人のボビットが学問や大学についての豆知識を教えてくれました。
イギリスの大学制度は、日本やアメリカと結構違う部分があるので、とても興味深いです。

「大学で○○を学んだ」＝"read"?!
“read”はとても古風に聞こえますが、オックスフォード大学やケンブリッジ大学などのより名声のある大学では、今でも使用されています。多くの政治家、医師、弁護士は、資格がよりアカデミックに聞こえるようにするため、“study”ではなく“read”を使うのを好むことがあります。
しかし、多くの場合、近年の学生や卒業生の大多数は“study”を好んで使用しています。

Do you “read” or “study” a subject at university?
Traditionally a university student would say “I’m reading law” rather than “I’m studying law”, and a graduate would say, “I read philosophy” rather than “I studied philosophy”.
Although “read” sounds very old-fashioned, it is still used at the more prestigious universities, such as the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge. Many politicians, doctors, and lawyers may prefer to use “read” rather than “study” as it makes their qualifications sound more academic.
However, in most situations, the majority of students and graduates nowadays prefer to use “study”.
"Major"と"Degree"
たとえば、アメリカ人が “I majored in mathematics”（数学を専攻した）、または “I have a major in mathematics”（数学を専攻している）と言う場合、イギリス人は “My degree is in mathematics”（私の学位は数学です）または “I have a mathematics degree”（数学の学位を持っています）と言います。

In the UK and other countries with academic systems based on the British model, they will use the term “degree” rather than “major” when referring to their qualification.
For example, where an American would say, “I majored in mathematics” or “I have a major in mathematics”, a British person would say, “My degree is in mathematics” or “I have a mathematics degree”.
「学位」と「優等学位」
イギリス式の大学制度を採用している多くの国では、「優等学位（honours degree）」もある場合があります。これらは通常の学位よりも地位が高く、学生が期待を上回る成績を残したか、またはコース自体がより高度なものだったということを示しています。
優等学位の中には、アメリカの修士号よりも価値が高いものもありますが、実際にはコースによって異なります。

A degree is an award from a university for completing their regular course of study.
In many countries with academic systems based on the British model, they may also have “honours degrees”. These are of a higher level than regular degrees and show that a student has either exceeded expectations or that the course itself was more advanced.
Some honour degrees may carry more weight than an American masters, but it really depends on the course.
あとがき
学問の名前はなじみがないものが多いので、自分の分野なら知っていても、他の人が勉強した分野の言い方は案外知らないのではないでしょうか？
