“I ride for honour, for chivalry, and for the Lady of the Lake!”
In a grim world of darkness and war, there is still a place for valour, virtue, and the thunder of hooves across green fields. Enter Bretonnia, a realm of noble ideals, shining armour, and relentless cavalry charges that crush evil beneath steel-shod hooves.
The Kingdom of Bretonnia is Warhammer Fantasy’s tribute to the legends of King Arthur and the chivalric romances of old. If you’ve ever dreamed of leading a glorious host of knights into battle, of banners snapping in the wind, and lances lowered in righteous fury, Bretonnia calls to you.
This is an army of faith, heroism, and galloping destruction.
A Glorious History: The Lady’s Chosen
Bretonnia was founded long ago when Gilles le Breton, the first and greatest king, was chosen by the Lady of the Lake to unite the fractured dukedoms against evil. With her blessing and the strength of his mighty companions, he carved a realm of honour and chivalry in a savage world.
Since then, Bretonnia has stood apart from the politics and black powder of the Empire. Its knights serve the Lady, live by the Code of Chivalry, and believe utterly in personal valour, divine guidance, and the superiority of mounted warfare. The peasants till the fields and serve the nobility, while the nobles ride to war in gleaming ranks under colourful banners.
Bretonnia may seem like a romantic ideal—but its warriors are no less deadly for their faith and flair.
Play Style: Cavalry Charges and Heroic Warfare
Bretonnia plays like no other army. While most factions rely on infantry, monsters, or ranged firepower, Bretonnia wins through raw speed, shock power, and the might of the lance. It’s a fast, momentum-driven army that rewards bravery and aggressive tactics.
• Cavalry Focus: Your knights are your hammer. They are fast, powerful, and deadly on the charge.
• Lance Formation: Unique to Bretonnia, lance formations hit like a wrecking ball and break enemy lines with ease.
• Peasant Support: While your knights do the heavy lifting, peasant bowmen and men-at-arms hold the line and screen your charges.
• Blessings of the Lady: The favour of the divine Lady gives your knights ward saves and divine protection for fighting honourably.
• Heroes and Quests: Your Lords and Paladins can undertake sacred quests, unlocking powerful rules and adding tons of narrative flavour.
The key to victory is timing your charges perfectly, therefore smashing the enemy’s flanks or centre before they can dig in. If you’re bold and decisive, Bretonnia will reward you.
Key Units: The Chivalric Arsenal
Bretonnia has a unique mix of gallant nobles and humble peasants, all bound by feudal tradition.
• Knights of the Realm: Your bread-and-butter cavalry. They are noble sons trained from birth to fight for honour and kingdom.
• Questing Knights: Battle-hardened warriors who’ve cast aside their lances to undertake sacred quests. They hit hard and never back down.
• Grail Knights: The holiest of warriors, blessed directly by the Lady. Near-immortal champions of chivalry who cut through foes like angels of death.
• Pegasus Knights: Flying nobles who harass war machines and outflank enemies with devastating speed.
• Men-at-Arms: Brave (if somewhat under-equipped) foot soldiers forming your basic infantry line.
• Peasant Bowmen: Cheap and numerous, they come with stakes and braziers to defend against cavalry and light up the battlefield.
• Field Trebuchet: One of your few war machines, hurling massive stones to flatten enemy formations before the charge.
No guns. No monsters. Just galloping glory, sharpened steel, and righteous zeal.
