Objective
To encourage active listening, logical thinking, and vocabulary use by guessing a mystery word from three given hints.
Level
Beginner to Intermediate (adjust vocabulary/hints accordingly)
Materials Needed
None (optional: whiteboard, cards, or slides)
Timer (optional for fast-paced play)
How to Run
Step One: Explain the Rules
1. One person gives three hints about a mystery object or thing.
2. The other students try to guess the correct answer based on the hints.
3. The hints should go from most difficult to easy.
For example:
– Hint 1: It’s round.
– Hint 2: You kick it.
– Hint 3: It’s used in soccer.
Answer: A ball!
Step Two: Model the Activity
Start with your own example to show the flow:
1. Give the hints slowly and clearly.
2. Encourage students to raise hands or call out answers.
3. Reveal the correct answer and ask: “Which hint helped the most?”
Step Three: Student Prep
Students can:
1. Prepare 1–2 sets of Three Hint Quizzes.
2. Work individually, in pairs, or in groups.
3. Present their hints aloud, one at a time.
Step Four: Guessing Time!
Other students listen and guess after each hint or wait for all three.
Encourage fun and teamwork — wrong answers are part of the game!
Tips for Success
1. Start with easy categories: animals, school items, food, countries.
2. Use simple grammar for lower levels.
3. Give hint-writing templates for shy students.
4. Encourage creativity: surprising or funny hints make it more fun!
Adaptations
1. Themed Quizzes: Limit categories (e.g., “Only food!” or “Only places!”).
2. Guess the Person: Famous people or classmates.
3. Picture Version: Show a picture after all hints for beginner classes.
