(Activities) Listen and Draw

Objective
To develop students’ listening comprehension, vocabulary recognition, and ability to follow directions — while having fun through drawing!

Level
All levels (adapt complexity of instructions to match level)

Materials Needed
Blank paper or whiteboards
Pencils, pens, or markers
Optional: pre-written instruction sheets for teachers

How to Run
Step One: Explain the Rules

1. Students will listen carefully as the teacher gives step-by-step instructions.
2. They must draw what they hear, without asking questions or seeing anything visual until the end.

Example:
“Draw a big circle in the middle of the page.”
“Now draw a small triangle on top of the circle.”
At the end, students compare their drawings to laugh and learn from the differences.

Step Two: Teacher Gives Instructions
You can:
1. Use a simple object (e.g., a house, robot, or animal face)
2. Give clear steps one at a time (5–10 instructions works well)
3. Repeat once if necessary, but don’t show anything until the end

Step Three: Drawing Time!
As you read each instruction:
1. Speak slowly and clearly
2. Use vocabulary the students know
3. Optionally, show gestures (for lower levels)

Step Four: Reveal and Compare
After all instructions are complete:
1. Reveal the target drawing (your own version or a prepared image)
2. Let students show theirs and compare
3. Discuss: “What was easy or hard to understand?”

Step Five: Let the Students Try!

Tips for Success
1. Start with simple shapes and positions: circle, square, top/bottom, left/right
2. Use prepositions: above, below, next to, inside, etc.
3. Make it funny or silly for engagement
4. Praise creativity — there’s no “perfect” version!

Adaptations
1. Pair Work: One student speaks or reads, the other draws
2. Theme-Based: Animals, monsters, faces, rooms, aliens
3. Online Class: Use shared drawing tools like Jamboard or whiteboard apps
4. Story Mode: Turn the directions into a mini narrative!
